Increase Website Traffic Free With 7 Simple Tips.
Increase website traffic takes time and patience.
Do you want more web traffic? Of course, you do.
Your website traffic is the first step in your top-of-funnel (TOF) digital marketing strategy. I’ll cover how to increase traffic to your website
Every company reaches a point when they need to ask themselves:
Am I driving new website traffic? Is it high-quality and targeted traffic? Is traffic converting into sales? And if not, how can I improve to maximize my efforts? That point should be brought up early on and repeated often.
Today’s customers are searching for businesses and services online, with desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and car GPS devices. The Wall Street Journal found that consumers today make 51% of their purchases on the web.
Businesses know that to succeed they have to stay up to date on their web presence and make sure that they maintain an online marketing strategy. That’s a hard bill to maintain with limited in-house services.
Of course, business owners want to stay competitive and grow their profitable sales leads. To help you do that we have put together some cost-effective ways to drive an increase in your website traffic, sales funnel conversion rates and generate new revenue.
It doesn’t matter if your business manufactures cables, is a consultant that implements Microsoft Dynamics, or any other type of small business, you are losing sales revenue without a focused content strategy centered around search engine optimization (SEO).
Marketing Sherpa reports show that 86% of consumers, looking for a local company to do business with, are using search engines, such as Google and Bing. About 97% of buyers conduct research on the internet before they buy a product or service and 70% select local businesses based solely on their digital research.
61 percent of buyers will read product reviews before making any purchase. On average, a consumer will visit three stores before making their purchase. That means you need to strike while the iron is hot.
In the list below, I’ve put together some tips for businesses to increase website traffic.
1. Local Search Directories / Influence Engines.
You must get all your NAP listing current. NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone Number. We all know Google is the number one search engine, but sometimes they need help getting this ‘right’. Most of you may not know there are over 50 key online local directories!
You must be using these listing sites to help Google rank your business so your target audience can find you. Here are a few examples for each category:
2. Offer Downloadable Content
Ebooks, reports, checklists, and industry faces and figures. It’s simple, people like free things, however those free offers need to provide tangible value to your prospects.
Giving away some free valuable educational information and including your website URL in the content is an effective and low-cost way of not only increasing website traffic but also driving new lead conversions.
Write some useful eBooks or reports with relevant content and offer them for free on your website. The catch? The viewer needs to give up their valuable contact information in exchange for the goods. Create forms and ask the visitors to leave their email address before they download your free content.
3. Publish Your Own eNewsletter.
Writing a newsletter on a regular basis is a great way to keep people returning to your website. In order to make this process as efficient as possible, be sure to automate your emails.
Automation can seem like a looming, tricky hurdle to jump, but luckily, there are plenty of inexpensive and easy ways to get started with automation.
Entrepreneur suggests using Autopilot, a great marketing automation platform that will allow you to program your emails and track email opens, clicks, and conversations. Email marketing, as it is also known, still works – despite the common fear of being considered spam. Just make sure that you are crafting personal, engaging messages that can catch your reader’s interest.
Once you’ve established a baseline smaller one-off marketing products like Autopilot are easy to outgrow. Marketing automation systems like SharpSpring are typically better utilized by businesses engaged in reoccurring marketing activities.
4. Get Social.
Your social media presence should act as a pathway to your website content. Social media channels are a great opportunity to promote your site’s blog content and nurture a relationship with your readers. Channels like Facebook and LinkedIn are great platforms to promote long-form content in particular.
Make sure that you’re embedding social media sharing buttons onto your blog posts, and downloadable content. That way, users can seamlessly share your content on their social profiles. Check out this Hubspot article that explains how to install social media sharing buttons on your blog posts.
While you might not see immediate results on social media, don’t discount the importance of consistency, building your base, and engaging with your audience. It’s almost a crazy thought that you have to be social on social media!
Remember to choose your hashtags strategically so that you can target your niche audience. Nobody likes a post that has 20 random hashtags attached to the bottom, it looks cheesy. If you’re having trouble figuring out how to reach your desired audience on your social media channels, check out some popular social media influencers in your industry.
If you’re on Twitter, check out the Twitter lists of your competitors or industry influencers. Twitter lists are curated groups of people that users want to reach. These lists can be a great way to keep up to date on important industry voices and have your brand recognized by others.
5. Create Topic Clusters to Increase Website Traffic.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is shifting to a topic cluster model, where a single “pillar” page acts as the main hub of content for an umbrella topic and multiple content pages that are related to that same topic link back to the pillar page and each other.
This linking action signals to search engines that the pillar page is an authority on the topic, and over time, the page may rank higher and higher for the topic it covers. The topic cluster model is a way of organizing a site’s content pages using a cleaner and more deliberate site architecture.
Watch the video below to learn more about the topic cluster methodology.
6. Start Writing and Active Content Marketing.
Blogging can carry a negative connotation within some industries, although it is a very effective way to build traffic to your website. If the word “blogging” reminds you of a young kid writing in a diary name it something else, because it is essential when growing website traffic.
Try insights, commentary, or news. Organic traffic doesn’t just magically appear. There are full teams of SEO specialists the dedicate their days to providing clients with new content that will register with Google indexing – and readers!
On your blog, you can discuss anything relevant to your market, the point is to engage interested knowledge seekers looking for someone like you. Broaching the subject of your website’s products and services is okay, just try to keep it to a minimum, and don’t forget to add internal links to your pages. This is known as a network effect which, again, improves your site’s visibility to Google – and readers!
Answering any questions your prospects and customers may have is an excellent way to generate readers, and reduce Q&A support. By blogging regularly, you will have fresh content that will get your website indexed by search engines and build keyword rankings. This, in turn, increases traffic to your website. Who would have thought?
There are many ways to get creative with blogging. Try your hand at guest blogging with different sites that have similar target audiences to you. Having your content posted on popular blogs is a great way to increase your website’s referral views and build connections with knowledgeable influencers.
Another tactic for blogging is to comment on other’s blog posts and respond to comments on your own blog posts. This can help to build your status as a trusted voice in your industry and inspire other users to visit your website in order to learn more about what you have to say.
One of the best ways to increase website traffic is to create a backlink strategy. Backlinks are external links that point back to your site. This is considered referral traffic. Some people may say that the more backlinks the better, but in this case, it’s really about quality over quantity.
Quality backlinks – those with high domain authority – will do much more to improve your SEO rankings than many low authority ones. Sites that search engines consider high quality are called ‘authority’ sites. When you build backlinks, you should focus on getting links from these players.
Low-quality websites that have little content and few visitors are a decent place to start building a reputation, but to get the most bang for your buck you’ve got to move upstream.
Moz has a great free tool to check for domain authority.
To get backlinks you have to promote your content to influencers and others in your target market. This method of promotion is similar to traditional media relations, only you are targeting influencers with social followers in your industry.
Crazy egg suggests you use the site explorer tool in Ahrefs to search for high-performing content to try and “outdo” competing posts. This is a great way to keep yourself updated on your competitors, make your content relevant, and useful to others in your industry.
As a side note, content syndication networks have come on strong in recent years. You might also try joining a syndication service like Outbrain, Zemanta, or SimpleReach.
8. Engage the Reader to Increase Website Traffic.

This is more of a general theme that should be implemented overall categories. You should be looking to engage your reader at every point you can.
Whether you’re responding to comments on a blog post, responding to social media users, or sending out an email newsletter, your company should always try to nurture open, honest engagement with your audience. Showcase your company and brand by sharing personal anecdotes where relevant so that you can establish a rapport with your audience.
As well as engaging with your audience, you should be looking to create content that inspires engagement. This could mean developing a content topic that answers user’s questions or provides new, valuable insight.
Entrepreneur suggests another great idea: developing some sort of contest that your audience can get involved in. Fun and simple contests are a great way to boost engagement on social media.
