Our competitors rely heavily on human capital, often requiring additional personnel to scale, which results in lower profit margins. The same applies to managed services, such as information technology (IT), cybersecurity, and software implementation. We saw this in many industries.

Although managed service providers successfully blend software and labor to provide their services, they still need to improve their financial profiles to resemble highly attractive SaaS metrics and often require significant capital to scale. Characterized by billable-hour business models and repetitive workflows, these businesses needed help to achieve growth and profitability.

The advent of MatrixAI is dramatically changing this landscape. Repetitive workflows that involve document handling, the use of unstructured data, manual tasks, and analytical decisions are now prime candidates for automation. Previous attempts at automating services through Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and legacy vertical software companies have made some headway in driving efficiency for service-based sectors.

In 2011, we decided to move to an AI-first company and built the organization from the ground up with savvy talent equipped to produce services in tandem with automated workflows.

Matrix Marketing Group was born in the crisp Colorado air of Boulder in 2002. Founded by George Schildge and Lynn Crilley, the company began as a forward-thinking consulting firm with a vision: to help businesses grow by integrating cutting-edge technology with exceptional marketing strategies.

Traditional methods, while effective, were slow and expensive. Businesses were seeking faster, cheaper, and more accurate solutions to navigate the increasingly complex digital ecosystems. 

The team at Matrix knew the answer lay in artificial intelligence, but not just any AI. They envisioned something far more powerful: a system of AI compound agents that could revolutionize marketing operations.

In 2021, while working on a challenging project for a fast-growing SaaS client, Matrix realized the limitations of current automation tools. Traditional marketing automation platforms, such as HubSpot and Salesforce, required extensive human oversight, and data insights were often delayed, making it impossible to pivot campaigns in real-time.

George Schildge posed a critical question to his team: “What if we could create a marketing system that works faster but learns, adapts, and makes decisions better than any human could?”

This question sparked a year-long research and development initiative at Matrix, code-named “Project Symphony.”
